Your vault passphrase is critical This passphrase encrypts your passwords locally — no one else can see them, including administrators. Choose something strong that you don't use anywhere else, and store it somewhere physically safe. There is no recovery option if you lose it.
Why do I need a passphrase if I already use Google to log in?

Google login verifies who you are. Your vault passphrase encrypts your data. They serve different purposes.

Your passwords are scrambled on your device before they ever reach the server. The server only ever stores encrypted data — it can't read your passwords, and neither can your administrator. Your passphrase is the only key that unscrambles them.

This is called zero-knowledge encryption. It means even if someone gained access to the server, they'd only find unreadable ciphertext.

What makes a strong vault passphrase?

A passphrase is stronger than a password when it's a sequence of random words — long but memorable. For example: correct-horse-battery-staple.

  • Use at least 4 unrelated words
  • Don't use something you've used before
  • Write it down and store it physically (drawer, notebook) — not digitally
  • You'll type it regularly on mobile, so don't make it impossible to type
